Setup a Homegroup and Share files in Windows

Homegroup allows you to share your files, videos, documents, pictures etc. between computers over your network but all computers must be connected to same router/network for this. Any device who have joined the homegroup can access your shared data but they cannot delete or modify it unless you give them permission to do it.

Note:

  • You can create Homegroup on Windows 7/8/8.1.
  • You cannot create but only join Homegroup on Windows 7 Home Basic/Start Edition and Windows RT and Windows 8.1 RT.
  • All accounts except Guest will appear on Homegroup
  • Computers only which are logged in will appear on Homegroup. Any sleeping/hibernated PC won't appear.
  • Network sharing should be turned on.

Turning on Network Sharing


1. Move your pointer to any right edge of screen and click Settings.

2. Go to Change PC Settings > Network > Connections.


3. Click to the network for which you want to turn on sharing.


4. Now turn on Find Devices and Printers option by clicking.

 

Creating Homegroup


1. Swipe in from right edge of screen or move your pointer to right edge and click Settings.
 
 
2. Go to Change PC Settings > Network > Homegroup.
 
 
3. Now click create (Note: If there is "Join" button instead of create, then it means someone has already created a Homegroup over your network, you can join that by clicking it).

4. Follow the simple steps, set password and other can use this password if they wish to join the Homegroup.
 

Choose what to share


1. Go to Homegroup under Network in PC settings as mentioned above.

2. Turn on/off the items you want to share.
 
 
3. You can also share a specific folder by right clicking it and under Share with menu click Share with Homegroup.
 
 

Leave a Homegroup


1. If you want to leave, follow all the steps of creating a Homegroup except for Create button there will be a Leave button at bottom. Press it.
 
 
2. If you want to unshared a folder, simply right click it move pointer at share with and click stop sharing.
